Responder bids 2§ (Stayman)
A response of 2§ to an opening bid of 1NT is the Stayman convention, asking opener about 4-card major suits. Reply as follows:
Responder bids 2¨, 2© or 2ª
This is a take-out bid, showing a weak hand with a long suit, which responder thinks will play better in the suit contract. Opener must pass.
Responder bids 2NT
This bid shows a balanced hand with 11-12 points and invites opener to bid 3NT if strong. With a good 1NT opening, bid 3NT, otherwise pass.
Responder bids 3 of a suit
This bid is game-forcing and asks opener to choose between the suit and no-trumps. With 3-card support or better for responder's suit, raise it to the 4 level, otherwise bid 3NT.
Responder bids game
If responder makes a game bid (3NT, 4 of a major or 5 of a minor), this is to play and opener should pass, as responder is in the better position to judge the best final contract.
Responder bids 4§ (Gerber)
A response of 4§ to an opening bid of 1NT is the Gerber convention, asking how many Aces opener holds. See the later section on slam bidding.
