Canal Photos - The M8 to Philpstoun

The old M8 motorway obstruction,
south of Broxburn

The new M8 bridge from the west
side, seen here at the opening celebrations with Pride of the Union underneath

obstruction just visible in the background

original bridge 25, and the A899 bridge

Port Buchan, Broxburn, home of the
Buchan Society (now superseded by the Bridge 19 to 40 Society). Major new
developments are planned here in the near future

The culvert at Greendykes Road,
Broxburn, was possibly the ugliest road crossing on the Union Canal. Now it
has been replaced by an attractive new bridge. (See next but one photo)

The other side of the Greendykes
Rd obstruction was not as bad, as rubbish more often tends to accumulate where
the canal water flows into a pipe. Also in this picture are some swans

The new Greendykes Road Bridge,
opened in May 2000, which allows boats to sail from Broxburn to Linlithgow

Between Broxburn and Winchburgh
the canal was until recently very run down looking. Bridge 29 was overgrown and
missing half its parapet, but has now been restored to its former condition

What's this? An exotic river
crossing a barren red desert? Actually, it's the Union Canal passing an old
shale bing near Winchburgh

At Winchburgh, the canal is in
a pleasant deep wooded cutting. The high bridge 32 carries the B9080 (formerly
the A9) over the canal

In the trees west of Winchburgh,
the arch of bridge 34 has been replaced by a flat deck, though the abutments
and keystone remain

canal over the road at Philpstoun
