Canal Photos - Glasgow to Temple

The impressive Spiers Wharf, near
the centre of Glasgow. The rightmost building is the old canal office building

Hamiltonhill Basin, near Glasgow
city centre. Several boats, owned by various societies and private individuals,
can be seen moored on the offside bank. At the far end is the British Waterways
HQ for Scotland, and a hydraulic replica of an original Forth and Clyde Canal
bascule bridge

At Firhill are some large basins
which have somehow survived without being filled in, which are sometimes used
for watersports. Also in the picture is the new Firhill Bridge, opened in
1990

There is another new bridge just
to the north where Ruchill Street crosses the canal. It replaced a drowned
culvert in 1991

This beautiful mural on a wall
next to the Ruchill Street Bridge was painted by Glasgow school children in
1996, and bears the optimistic message 'Our canal, our future'

The Glasgow branch of the canal
meets the mainline at Stockingfield Junction. This picture looks along the
mainline towards Kirkintilloch. Visible in this picture are the remains of an
old wartime stop lock

The flight of 5 locks at Maryhill
were the first ones on the canal to be restored

With smart new cast iron gates
and working paddle gear, this flight of five locks is no longer a dangerous
urban eyesore, but once again a functional canal feature

When built in 1790, the Kelvin
Aqueduct was the largest one in Britain, and though it no longer holds that
accolade, it is still very impressive, and definitely one of the finest
canal features in Scotland

Govan Cottage Bridge on Cleveden
Road was replaced by this restrictive Armco culvert - but things have
changed since the 60s, and now there is a proper bridge here again

At Temple there are two locks, 26 and
27 (the latter has a canalside pub named after it). The picture shows lock 26 shortly
after the installation of its new gates

A huge lifting bridge carries
Bearsden Road over the canal at Temple. Just visible in the background is a
pre-restoration lock 27
