Canal Photos - Falkirk to Kirkintilloch

Aqueduct across a burn at Bonnybridge, with a pedestrian walkway

The road crossed the canal on a restrictive armco culvert at Bonnybridge. A new vertical lifting bridge has replaced it since this picture was taken

New canalside pub by the restored Underwood Lock (17), just west of Bonnybridge

Castlecary Lock, no. 19. Locks 17 to 19 were refurbished during the 1990s but were not really much use until 2001 when the blockages on either side were removed

The old Castlecary swingbridge remained fixed in position just to the east of the new A80 until late 2000 when it was replaced by a new high level concrete bridge. Just visible on the left in this picture is a new picnic site, although right next to the A80 is about the most inappropriate place on the canal to have one

The canal was closed in 1963 so that the A80 dual carriageway could be built across it on this culvert. Work to reverse this damage by taking the road over the canal on a bridge cost about £2 million and caused major disruption to the road

Wyndford lock marks the eastern end of the canal's summit pound. The road bridge across the chamber is yet another example of a bridge which had to be rebuilt when the canal was reopened

Craigmarloch Bridge, just west of Dullatar Bog. The little bridge in the foreground takes the towpath across the canal's main water feed

Forth and Clyde Canal Society boat, the Gipsy Princess, in her basin at Auchinstarry

Auchinstarry swingbridge near Kilsyth. It has been replaced by a new fixed bridge since this picture was taken

At Hillhead in Kirkintilloch is an old swingbridge which was restored to working order for the canal's reopening

Second largest aqueduct on the canal, across the Luggie Water in Kirkintilloch

Looking across the Luggie Aqueduct to the bridge carrying Kirkintilloch Bypass Road over the canal. Kirkintilloch has the largest concentration of swans anywhere on the lowland canals, as this picture demonstrates.

Early 2000 saw the disappearance of one of the canal's most hated features, the Townhead Culvert in Kirkintilloch. It was replaced by this bridge.
