New bridge over the canal at
Preston Road, Linlithgow. This was the first road culvert on the Union Canal
to be removed. The plaque acknowledges the European Regional Development Fund,
who gave a substantial grant towards the bridge

Original bridge 46, just west of
Linlithgow. Some of the bridges around this area were built using local stone and look
slightly different from the others

Woodcockdale are now used by the West Lothian Sea Scouts

The Avon Aqueduct west of Linlithgow
is the longest and tallest in Scotland. These pictures were taken from

Like many original bridges,
bridge 49 has been strengthened to cope with carrying a modern road (in this
case the B825)

This
small culvert under Vellore Road was for some time the limit of navigation
from Linlithgow.

Now the culvert has been replaced
by a new bridge, and a picnic area has been built on the offside. The bridge
was completed in February 2000, making Vellore Road the first obstruction on
the Union Canal to be removed by the Millennium Link project.

A more serious blockage was the
A801 crossing a few hundred yards beyond.

The A801 culvert has now also
been replaced by a bridge. Here, the canal was diverted to the south where the
road was higher up.
