Canal Photos - Monkland Canal

A section of the Monkland Canal
which was filled in during the 60s has been reinstated as part of the
Summerlee Heritage Centre, an open-air museum near Coatbridge

But this section is still not
navigable, as the footpath culvert in the foreground of this picture shows

Summerlee

Unfortunately most of the
Monkland Canal remains underground. It flows in pipes underneath this
children's playground between Summerlee and Coatbridge

In the centre of Coatbridge, the
canal was criss-crossed by roads, paths and railways, a spot known
unimaginatively as 'The Bridges'

A small section of canal has
been reinstated here, and with fountains it forms an attractive part of the
town

An original section of the canal
still remains just west of Coatbridge. Just beyond Blair Bridge is the weir
where the canal flows out of the pipes which carry it under the town

Drumpelier Home Farm Bridge
was replaced by a drowned culvert after the canal's closure, but some
restoration work has been carried out on this section since then. This replica
of the original bridge has replaced the culvert, and the canal has been
dredged, allowing it to be used by boats. This section is accessible from
Drumpelier Country Park
